ABOUT THE CITY
Famed for Golden Temple, the holy shrine and temporal seat of the Sikhs, Amritsar lies in the vibrant state of Punjab, India. A showpiece of the prosperity and wealth of the state, people here are also influenced by strong religious spirituality. Agriculture, commerce and industry are the main sources of the city’s wealth. Amritsar featured prominently in the struggle for independence and it holds strategic importance due to its close proximity to Pakistan.
 
IN AND AROUND THE CITY

Amritsar Weekend TravelStanding in the center of a large tank, AMRIT SAROVAR, is the holiest seat of the Sikhs- GOLDEN TEMPLE or DARBAR SAHIB.

Close by is the DURGIANA TEMPLE dedicated to Lakshmi Narayana. JALIANWALA BAGH, a premier national monument, is dedicated to the hundreds of martyrs who lost their lives in the massacre of 1919.

WAGAH BORDER, 30 km from Amritsar, is the international boundary with Pakistan and the sunset ‘retreat’ ceremony is an interesting experience. HARI-KE-PATTAN is a scenic spot that lies on the confluence of the rivers Beas and Sutlej.

AMANAT KHAN is a quaint village close to Amritsar. It has an old serai(inn) with a beautifully tile-decorated gateway. In close proximity are the cities of JALANDHAR, the Radhaswami dera at BEAS, industrial city of LUDHIANA, AMBALA and the capital, CHANDIGARH.

 
THINGS TO DO

Amritsar is famous for and a producer of Papads and Warians- a spicy foodstuff. Guru bazaar and Hall bazaar are the markets tp shop for these food items and also the famous Jadau jewellery. It is also a large producer of woollen blankets and shawls and hosiery goods. Fabric embroidered with the traditional Phulkari embroidery are also famous as are the embroidered, handmade shoes called Jootis. Kesar da Dhaba at Passiamwala chowk and Bharawan da Dhaba near the Town Hall are well known for their authentic amritsari cuisine, like- a wide variety of stuffed paranthas, karhi, saag,makki roti and to top it all off, a tall glassful of lassi.
